These days, it’s extremely easy to build a website. The average Joe can install a simple CMS (Content Management System) and get a website up and running in a matter of minutes. This is a great achievement, and is what has aided in the creation of millions of new websites on the Internet over the last decade or so. Although with the rise of popular CMS’s like WordPress, Magento, Joomla, and Drupal, many website owners are resorting to the use of pre-built themes for their websites. However, is this a good business practice? We’ll take a deeper look into if pre-built themes are right for your business.
Cheap and Affordable Solution
Let’s be honest, no one likes paying more money than they have to. With pre-built themes starting as low as $29.99, it’s very tempting to quickly purchase a new theme, and go on about your day. What if you’re in a hurry to launch a new website, but don’t have the time to design a theme yourself from scratch? Perhaps you have all the time in the world, but lack the necessary design skill to implement it yourself, and hiring a designer isn’t in the budget? Pre-built themes are definitely a great way to quickly get things going without breaking the bank.
Not to mention that many themes are made available free of charge. This makes using them a very attractive option for website owners. However it’s important to note that when it comes to using free themes and templates, they generally only contain very basic features and customizations, unlike the added bling and extras that you often find from their premium counterparts.
Although pre-built themes are great, if you’re running a business or planning to start one, what will make your website stand out from everyone else’s? How is your website unique? If you bought a theme, it’s very likely that hundreds or thousands of other website owners may have bought the same exact one. With first impressions counting for everything these days (especially so in business), you want to come off as professional, and provide a great experience to your users, not have them thinking you’re too cheap to have the face of your business done right.
Not only that, but depending on the type of website being built, your design needs to be very focused, and aid users in being able to quickly navigate the website. Unfortunately, not all pre-built themes provide this, as not all websites are made equally. You could still tweak a the pre-built theme/template to your liking, but depending on the type of site you want, it may be more trouble than what it’s worth.
Just my Style
Where pre-built themes fall short, nothing beats a custom tailored design. While often the more expensive option, a custom design for your website or business is often the best choice. Lets say for example that you came up with the idea for service that allows users to post short 140 character messages for anyone that goes to their page to see (aka Twitter). Well what themes are there really that are built around that idea? None at all really, at least not back in 2006 there weren’t. The idea for Twitter wasn’t something generic, it had never really been done before.
So to try to use a pre-built theme back then would have been a huge challenge that really wasn’t worth the time. Developers would have had to basically spend most of the time working to tweak the theme to look halfway decent, not to mention the woes users would experience with navigating the website, since the flow of the website would be predefined by the themes creator. Bottom line, is that if you’re not building a generic blog, or something that has already been done before, a custom theme is the best option. Not only is it unique to your brand, but will also provide your visitors with a richer user experience than could otherwise be done.

So which one is right for you? Typically this is judged by looking at what type of website you’re having built or wanting to build. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to get a good feel of what’s right for you:
- Does your budget for the website (including development) exceed the triple digits range?
- Is your website unique, or has it already been done before?
- Is your focus on building a brand?
