The year 2013 was a blast! Not only it was known for being the Chinese year of the snake, but for web designers, 2013 also holds the title for being called the “Year of Responsive Web Design”. Trends change fast, and web technologies even faster, so what does the “Year of the Horse” have in store? We’ll take a look at the anticipated 2014 design trends you can expect to see in the coming year.
Just KISS (Keep it Simple Stupid) Already!
As Leonardo De Vinci once said “simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication”. In today’s fast paced age, less “is” actually more. Users don’t want to spend time figuring out how to navigate an overly complicated website, but would rather get to what they were originally looking for. This is becoming more evident when it comes to web design. More and more websites are following the KISS way of design. You can expect to see more and more of this in the months to come.
It’s been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. With the rise in popularity of HTML5, more websites are ditching flash, and are instead realising the benefits that HTML5 video capabilities have to offer, especially those wanting to capture the mobile and tablet markets. We’ve recently put a time lapse HTML5 video on the homepage of ChillyBin, and YouTube offers native HTML5 support when enabled.

Responsive Design isn’t Going Anywhere
Lastly, lets talk a little bit about responsive web design. With mobile browsing at a steady climb, more websites are going the responsive route each day. From phones, laptops, tablets, and the wide variety of screen resolutions in between, responsive design just makes sense! Why build mobile versions of the same site, when you can build the site to respond to and resize itself appropriately for any device a user chooses? Tools like Twitter Bootstrap make it insanely easy and affordable for any developer to quickly build and deploy responsive websites. Expect to see responsive web design sticking around through 2014 and beyond. All the projects that ChillyBin does utilising the awesomely powerful Genesis framework from StudioPress has awesome responsive capabilities right out of the box, including the brand new Parallax Pro Theme!
